Bug - 2013 - Atropos

Bug is a four piece hardcore punk band from Innsbruck, Austria. Atropos is their new LP. Bug plays an eclectic brand of hardcore punk bringing in sludge and noise rock to fuel their attack.  The guitar has a nice thick, distorted tone than can be pealed away for something approaching a melodic solo while the singer has a gruff shout that he puts to great use. Every song shows a different side of this band, a different facet they focus while still creating a coherent album that explodes at you from all directions. The Great Beast Speaks has an off kilter mathy rhythm while Jesus Wept tears everything apart before rebuilding a monstrous, sludgy beast and tearing it down again. If you like your hardcore chaotic and eclectic but still hard hitting, Bug's Atropos will serve well.

Celeste - 2013 - Animale(s)

Celeste is a four piece hardcore punk band from Lyons, France. Animale(s) is their fourth LP. It is a double album of blackened screamo which Celeste do well. These songs feel like hardcore or screamo songs that get stretched and morphed with black metal instrumentation into tools of darkness and doom. The screamo and hardcore influences keep the songs chaotic and bring an explosive energy. If you like your screamo blackened, Celeste's Animale(s) will serve well.

Dumah - 2013 - Caida Libre

Dumah is a hardcore punk band from San Jose, Costa Rica. Caida Libre is their debut EP. They play a straight forward brand of hardcore. The guitars are thick and distorted, the singer has desperate, angry shout and the songs come crashing down on you with no warning. If you like hardcore punk you will be served well by Dumah's Caida Libre.

Criminal Damage - 2013 - Call Of Death

Criminal Damage is a street punk band from Portland, Oregan, USA. Call Of Death is their new LP. Criminal Damage members have also played in  Deathreat, His Hero is Gone, Face Down, Rueben James, Call The Police and Well Away but this doesn't sound anything like those bands, instead playing an old school brand of street punk that would not be out of place in England in the late 70's. Reminds me of Kremlin in that old school hardcore and street punk vibe. Here's where I would list my favourite songs but this album is really solid. If you like your hardcore with an old school street punk vibe Criminal Damage's Call Of Death will serve well. Link via Subterranean Sedition

Chorygen - 2013 - Chorygen

Chorygen is a d-beat hardcore punk band from Lodz, Poland. Chorygen is their debut EP. Members have also played in ALERT! ALERT! & 45 Revolutions Per Minute. They play a vicious brand of crusty, sludgy d-beat, the lofi production only serves to create an atmosphere of fear and desperation whipped into a frenzy. These songs are a giant yet nimble beasts that will crush everything below them while simply walking around. If you like your hardcore with some crusty d-beat, Chorygen's Chorygen will serve well. CVNNT - 2013 - Charly Two-Shoes

CVNNT is a power violence band from the United Kingdom. Charly Two Shoes is their debut ep. They play a straight forward brand of grindcore liberally throwing in powerviolence and some hardcore by way of Converge. 10 Songs in under 7 minutes, you know what you're getting yourself into. Highlights include Your Mum, and Piss On Your Boots and The Moment Of Dying. If you like grindcore or powerviolence, CVNNT should serve well. Link courtesy of Dead At The Pulpit.

The Ground Is Lava - 2013- Bottle Rockets

The Ground Is Lava is a three piece emo band from Brunswick, Ohio, USA. Bottle Rockets is their second LP. They play a noodly, sloppy, melodic brand of emo. They pull influences from Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing and Cap'n Jazz creating a brand of emo that pulls energy from pop punk, twinkle from that side of emo and just a little math rock and post-punk in how they construct their songs. The singer has a desperate shout that can also be melodic and is accented by some shouted gang vocals while the guitars transition between twinkly and straight ahead emo. Highlights include Not Tonight, Jeff; Look, Babe, An Island (We Can Live On It); Nobody Likes You, Booster; If you like your emo with some twinkle and ramshackle feel The Ground Is Lava's Bottle Rockets will serve well.

Thumbsuckers - 2013 - Baby I'm Just A...Thumbsucker

Thumbsucker is a hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Baby I'm Just A...Thumbsucker is their debut EP. They play a thrashy, lofi brand of hardcore punk that pulls no punches. They would remind me of Off! if the production was any better. If you like your hardcore punk desperate and lofi, Thumbsucker's Baby I'm Just A...Thumbsucker will serve well.

Terrible Feelings - 2013 - Backwoods

Terrible Feelings is a three piece rock band from Malmo, Sweden. Backwoods is their new EP. Terrible Feelings play a brand of rock and roll that throws proto punk and power pop into a melting pot, adding a little surf for energy. These three songs conjure a dark, melodic sound scape in which we can wallow and play. If you like your rock and roll with a driving beat and a darkly cool sense of melody Terrible Feeling's Backwoods will serve well.

Night Birds - 2013 - Born To Die In Suburbia

Night Birds is a four piece punk band from New Jersey, USA. Born To Die In Suburbia is their new LP. Night Birds play a brand of hardcore punk that is tempered by a heavy helping of surf rock. The opening instrumental track Escape from New York set the up tempo, melodic pace which holds through the whole album. The intro is the most obviously surf influenced track here but these songs are infused with a spastic energy that keeps everything moving at a breakneck pace. Highlights include Domestic Dispute, Ads In My Eyes, New Cults, Silver Alert, and the aforementioned Escape From New York. If you like your hardcore punk with lots of jump straight up and down energy Night Bird's Born To Die In Suburbia will serve well.

Into it Over It - 2013 - Intersections

Into It Over It is a project founded by Evan Thomas Weiss from Chicago, Illinois. Intersection is his new LP. Previously Evan has played in bands like The Progress, Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, Map The Growth and Stay Ahead Of The Weather and put out splits with bands like CSTVT, Everyone Everywhere, Such Gold, Pswingset, Empire! Methmouth - 2013 - Bleach Bath

Methmouth is a powerviolence band from Miami, Florida. Bleach Bath is their third album. They play a noisy, aggressive, lofi brand of powerviolence that pulls no punches. These are six songs full of rage and loathing and they unleash their anger directly at your most vulnerable body parts. If you like powerviolence you will like this, but if you don't Methmouth doesn't seem interested in winning over converts, they're too focused on smashing every thing around them. if you like powerviolence, Methmouth's Bleach Bath will serve will.

A Day To Remember - 2013 - Common Courtesy

A Day To Remember are a five piece pop metalcore band. Common Courtesy is their fifth LP. They play a combination of pop punk and metalcore that has been described as easycore, emo-pop or pop-mosh. They combine growled vocals and standard issue metalcore with clean vocals and catchy pop punk. If that sounds appealing, A Day To Remember's Common Courtesy will scratch that itch.

Bad American - 2013 - American Dream

Bad American is a hardcore punk band from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, America. American Dream is their new LP. They play a straight ahead brand of hardcore punk, these songs pummel you for on average a minute and a half before jumping into the next slab of aggressive punk. Highlights include Control Freak, Bash, Failure, Zero Faith, Shitshow and Decayed. If you like your hardcore punk pummeling and to the point, Bad American's American Dream will serve well. Ovlov - 2013 - AM

Ovlov is an indie rock band from Newtown, Connecticut, USA. AM is their debut LP. They play a noisy brand of shoegaze rock drawing influences from Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine. The vocals are melodic, whiny and mixed low while the guitars rage underneath layers of distortion. The production serves to bury each song underneath a layer of mud from which distorted guitars and pounding drums escape. Each song starts at full speed and increases from there. The songs do blur together a little bit but that also works to create a more cohesive album. Highlights include The Well, Nü Pünk and Milk.  If you like your indie rock with buried under layers of distortion Ovlov's AM will serve well.

Roanoke - 2013 - Beautiful People

Roanoke is a four piece screamo band from Rockford, Illinois, USA. Beautiful People is their 3rd release. They play a noisy brand of screamo that isn't afraid of some ambient and post-hardcore passages. The guitars can shift back and forth between a more straight forward screamo or hardcore attack to a more melodic, sometimes ambient feel very quickly but these songs never stop being heavy and powerful. The singer has an excellent scream that he puts to very good use. Highlights include Skeletons, I'm Trying and Feeling It Out. If you like your screamo with a little post-hardcore and even some ambient Roanoke's Beautiful People will serve well.

Destruction Unit - 2013 - Deep Trip

Destruction Unit is a psychedelic noise punk band from the United States. Deep Trip is their debut LP. Destruction Unit features members of Reatards, The Wongs and Tokyo Electron and play a noisy, spacey brand of psychedelic punk. These songs drape themselves in various layers of distortion over top a base of hardcore punk and launch themselves into outer noisy psychedelic space. Highlights include Control The Light, The Holy Ghost,   If you like your punk noisy and aggressive then Destruction Unit's Deep Trip will serve well. Link via Elementary Revolt

Gris - 2013 - À L'âme Enflammée, L'äme Constellée...

Gris is a black metal band from Quebec, Canada. À L'âme Enflammée, L'äme Constellée... is their second LP. They play melodic, atmospheric, depressive black metal. Instead of pummeling you over and over in the face with aggressive misanthropy, Gris creates a dark, gloomy orchestral sound scape and sucks you into their dark reality.



There are still aggressive raggers like Les Forges but even it is tampered with some melody. The singer has an excellent scream which he uses with great effect. If you're down for some gloomy atmosphere and a hint of melody in your black metal, Gris' À L'âme Enflammée, L'äme Constellée... will serve well.

Culture Abuse - 2013 - The Day Dreams Of Nothing

Culture Abuse are a five piece punk rock band from Santa Rosa & San Francisco. The Day Dreams Of Nothing is their debut EP. Culture Abuse features members of Defeater, All Teeth, Strike To Survive, and Dead To Me and plays an off kilter brand of hardcore punk. These songs are obviously rooted in hardcore punk but they come out wonky and fuzzy, drenched in fuzz, beer and weed owing a debt to the Melvins. I want to call it mysterious guy hardcore but that's lazy and derivative which this album isn't. If you like your hardcore with some strangeness to it, Culture Abuse's The Day Dreams Of Nothing serves well.

Direct Hit! - 2013 - Brainless God

Direct Hit! is a four piece pop punk band from Milwaukee, USA. Brainless God is their new LP. They have put out splits with bands like Mixtapes, Tit Patrol, Jetty Boys, Hold Tights, the Haverchucks and Braver. They have studied at the feet of Andrew W.K., The Ramones and The Thermals, throwing all that into a blender and never letting their feet off the gas pedal. Now would be the part where I would list highlights but damn near every song on here is really good. If you like energetic, speedy pop punk that hasn't completely forgotten their hardcore roots, Direct Hit!'s Brainless God will serve well.

Casket - 2013 - Casket

Casket is a four piece emo band from San Francisco, California, USA. Casket is their debut EP. There's no twinkle here, just straight ahead punk rock with a plaintive singer. Highly recommended.

American Sharks - 2013 - American Sharks

American Sharks are a three piece punk rock band from Austin, Texas, America. American Sharks is their debut album. They are currently on tour with Clutch and The Sword. American Sharks play a garage infused brand of punk rock that takes tongue in cheek punk and runs it through modern filters of bands like Torche and The Demonics.



 If The Ramones smoked more dope and had kids with The Stooges that listened to Leatherface, those kids would sound something like this. The album is a little front loaded but all these songs are solid jams and this album is over far too quickly.  Highlights include Iron Lungs!, Freak Out, Overdrive, Cocaine, 11:11

Doomriders are a four piece band from Boston, Massachusetts. Grand Blood is their third LP released by Deathwish Inc. Members have also played in Converge, Old Man Gloom and There Were Wires. Doomriders have released splits with bands like Coliseum, Boris, Disfear and Sweet Cobras. 

Toasted Plastic- 2013 - June Highs

Toasted Plastic is a three piece punk band from Ridgewood, New Jersey, America. June Highs is their third release. Toasted Plastic plays a brand of punk rock that infuses math rock into their songwriting. These songs have a noodly tendency but not the in the twinkly form that seems to have overtaken emo as of late, there is lots of melody in the guitars and the singer has a gruff shout that he puts to great use. Highlights include Repair, Looming, Last Rites and Greater Thinking, If you like your emo punked up and mathy Toasted Plastic's June Highs will serve well.

Perfect Future - 2013 - Irrational, Malleable, Inevitable

Perfect Future are a four piece emo band from Frostburg, MD / Annandale, VA. Irrational, Malleable, Inevitable is their new EP, courtesy of Count Your Lucky Stars Records. They have put out splits with bands like Reaching Away, List and Wits. They play a brand of emo that Count Your Lucky Stars seems to specialize in but aren't afraid of throwing in some punk influences to liven things up and give the songs some kick. If you like your emo unafraid of crossing genre barriers, Perfect Future's Irrational, Malleable, Inevitable will serve well.

Locktender - 2013 - Kafka

Locktender is a four piece screamo band from Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Kafka is their fifth release under this name. Previously the band was known as Men As Trees. They have put out splits with bands like Oaken, Wounded Knee, Coma Regalia,  Brighter Arrows and Cassilis. Locktender plays screamo but is unafraid of bringing elements of sludge and post-hardcore into their sound. Aphorism #17 starts off as a brutally heavy frontal attack that slows to a glacial crawl before building their hardcore fury again and then infusing melody and some calm. Not being familiar with Franz Kafka I'm not qualified to say if these songs properly represent the The Zürau Aphorisms they are based on but these are amazing songs nonetheless. Locktender's Kafka is highly recommended.

Father Figure - 2013 - Jumping Off A Building

Father Figure is a three piece screamo band from Denton, Texas, America. Jumping Off A Building is their new EP. Members also play in Innards and Two Knights. They play a brand of screamo that isn't afraid to pull its punches There are moments of calm and melody, offset by desperate, throat ripping screams and then moments of all out attack and aggression. Highlights include: what the hell is on jonny's head?, death is my way out (d.i.m.w.o.), mean girls ripoff, maybe i'm upset, no, wait, definitely., and  this is my attempt at an apology . Paint It Black - 2013 - Invisible EP

Paint It Black is a four piece hardcore band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Invisible is their ninth release. They play an emotionally charged brand of melodic hardcore with some gruff vocals. Paint It Black is associated with record labels like No Idea, Fat Wreck Chords, Bridge Nine and Jade Tree and feature members from bands like Lifetime and Kid Dynamite. Highlights include Little Fists and Greetings, Fellow Insomniacs. If you like your hardcore with just a driving sense of melody and a refusal to give anything less than 110% Paint It Black's Invisible will serve well.

Kilgore Trout - 2013 - Immemorial

Kilgore Trout is a four piece screamo band from Annandale, Virginia, USA. Immemorial is their third release. They play a straight ahead brand of screamo citing Jeromes Dream and Usurp Synapse as influences. There is a hint of melody in the guitars at times but otherwise this is a chaotic, all out attack on your senses. These songs come hurtling at full speed and if they let up its only slam back into full speed once again. If you like you screamo desperate and chaotic, Kilgore Trout's Immemorial will do well.

Neo Cons - 2013 - Idiot Circus

Neo Cons is a four piece hardcore punk band from San Francisco, California, USA. Idiot Circus is their latest and final EP. They play a straight ahead brand of hardcore punk. No frills, no extras, just fast, pissed off hardcore punk that knows how lay the beatdown. Features ex members of 86 Mentality and Streetwalkers. They throw in a little garage and some street punk for flavour but otherwise this is no frills straight ahead hardcore punk. If you like hardcore punk in any capacity, Neo Cons' Idiot Circus is well worth checking out.

I Kill Giants - 2013 - I Kill Giants

I Kill Giants is a four piece emo post-hardcore band from Boston, Massachusets. I Kill Giants is their fifth release. They play a brand of punk that pulls from the noodly, all most off key shouting brand of emo and run it through math rock filters. I Kill Giants have put out splits with bands like Sinatra, My First Castle, Empire! Empire! and The Greek Favourites These songs are catchy, energetic and unafraid of a little noodling to get their melodic point across. Highlights include Collector, Lucky Shirt, Traveler, Larry Jr, Calender and Boys Of Bummer.  If you like your punk with a dosing of emo and math I Kill Giant's I Kill Giants will serve well.

Moaded - 2013 - Coyote Nerd Demo

Moaded is a four piece screamo band from Milwaukee, USA. Coyote Nerd is their debut EP. They play a straight forward brand of screamo that takes no prisoners. Moaded has members of Khandu, Treehouse, Swear Words, and My Cat Died Where The Sidewalk Ends. The singer has a great rough shout and the band pumps out ramshackle yet pummelling hardcore screamo underneath him. If you like Beau Navire, Loma Prieta or Merchant Ships there will almost certainly be something here for you. If you like your screamo unrelenting and thrashy Moaded's Coyote Nerd will do nicely.

For the Kid in the Back - 2013 - Coffee On An Empty Stomach

For the Kid in the Back is Justin Passino from Plattsburgh, NY, USA. Coffee On An Empty Stomach is his third LP. Throw together The Weakerthans, Mike Kinsella and Trunks & Tales into an acoustic blender and you'll be in the right neighborhood.




Highlights include Bite My Tongue, I See The Worst In Everything, More Than I Deserve, The Sheep Eats The Flower and A Stair Worn Hollow, Some of these songs have driving rhythms, some put multi tracked vocals to great use, and some swell to sad, majestic heights while others just settle into their melancholy. If you like your emo acoustic and unabashedly sad, For The Kid In The Back's Coffee On An Empty Stomach will serve well.

Oswald - 2013 - Blunders

Oswald are a two piece emo band from New Paltz, NY, USA. Blunders is their debut EP. They play a scrappy, noodly brand of emo. If you liked Topbunk from a little while back, you should be into this. These are wiry, indie rock songs infused with emo from the Nai Harvest or 1994! school of thinking. The singer has a desperate shout and they can get a pretty full sound with just the two piece. Highlights include It's Better Than Cannibalism, I Suppose and Number One Feel Good Movie Of The Summer. If you like your emo with some twinkle in the mix Oswald's Blunders will serve nicely.

Elesh Norn - 2013 - All The Pain I Built Up

Elesh Norn is a four piece screamo band from Denton, Texas, America. All The Pain I Built Up is their debut EP. They play a chaotic brand of screamo with a bit of post-hardcore in the songwriting. The singer has a screachy, high pitched voice while the band pumps out a pummelling brand of screamo. Elesh Norm is unafraid of a stop/start dynamic and these songs refuse to die quietly ). Sometimes there is a moment of calm or melody before the chaos ensues but it is only a mirage in the storm Highlights include: Simultaneously Slamming Doors And Screaming, A Pathetic Way to Say I Need You, Hopeless and An Exerices In Breathing. If you like your screamo screachy with a hardcore thump, Elesh Norn's All The Pain I Built Up

Crude Drawings Of Dicks - 2013 - Führerbunker

Crude Drawings Of Dicks are a five piece screamo band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Führerbunker is their new EP. They play a straight ahead brand of screamo that isn't afraid of pulling their punches. Crude Drawings Of Dicks cite La Dispute, Toru Okada, and Pianos Become the Teeth among others as influences. Reminds me of a more raggedy, screamo version of The Whoopass Girls. The singer has a desperate shout that he puts to good use and the band churns out quality screamo for him and the rest of the band to shout over. Highlights include Roach Killer, Eyluh, and Watching Roman Holiday Alone. If you like your screamo rough and tumble with some post-hardcore influences, Crude Drawings Of Dicks' Führerbunker will do well. 

Guillemet - 2013 - Guillemet

Guillement are a five piece screamo band from Chicago, Illinois, America. Guillement is their new LP. They play a chaotic brand of screamo that rarely comes down from shear aggression. Their style of screamo constantly shifts around but never backs away from aggression. Reminds me of Loma Prieta and Kaoru Nagis. If you like your screamo with some powerviolence and some post-hardcore, Guillemet will serve quite well.

Highness - 2013 - Hold

Highness is a five piece post-hardcore band from Brooklyn, New York, America. Hold is their debut LP. Members have also played in such seminal bands as Christie Front Drive, pg 99, City of Caterpillar and more. Lots of catchy melodic hardcore that borrows heavily from the emo side of things. Gaea (Strings) comes barrelling out of the gates fulling form, trumpeting a band at the top of their game operating at full capacity, We're All We Need builds to a beautiful, melodic crescendo allowing everything to fall apart and Stitched Together simply kicks ass.  These songs build and tear themselves down with ease. The melodic hardcore space a lot of these songs operate in reminds me of Make Do And Mend style post-hardcore. If you like emo, hardcore or post-hardcore in any capacity at all, or just like good music made by old friends, Highness' Loud is highly recommended.

Pity Sex - 2013 - Feast Of Love

Pity Sex is a four piece shoegaze band from Ann Arbor, Michigan, America. Feast Of Love is their debut LP, third release overall, courtesy of Run For Cover Records. Expect multiple vocalists, layers of guitars and a near constant wall of sound. The songs are based around indie rock with shoegaze coming in with the wall of sound, burying the vocals in the mix and throwing in a keen sense of melancholy borrowed the emo side of things. The best song on the album is the opener Wind-Up, other highlights include the slowburn of Sedated and the driving rock of Drown Me Out and Honey Pot. If you like your indie rock fused with shoegaze and just a little emo, Pity Sex's Feast Of Love will serve well.

This Routine Is Hell - 2013 - Howl

This Routine Is Hell is a four piece hardcore punk band from Utretcht, Netherlands. Howl is their 3rd release.



 They play a straight forward brand of hardcore punk that isn't content to stay within the boundaries of anyone genre. The overriding sensibility is of hardcore punk of the beatdown variety but there are also moments influenced by emo and even a little bit of melodic hardcore.



Highlights include the title track, Don't Let Them and Nostalgia. Reminds me of Ceremony in stretching hardcore to it's limits and mining those border regions for aggressive, emotional gold.



 If you like your hardcore punk not content to be simply hardcore punk but never letting up on the aggression pedal, This Routine Is Hell's Howl will serve well.

Disembarked - 2013 - I Do Nothing But Regret The Fact That I Left

Disembarked is a five piece screamo band from Stockholm, Sweden.  I Do Nothing But Regret The Fact That I Left is their third release, courtesy of Dog Knights Productions. Their brand of screamo is inflected with some post-rock, giving it a melodic bite which thankfully isn't overpowering. The singer has a desperate shout reminiscent of The Saddest Landscape when he's not screaming his lungs out. The band behind him is nimble and not afraid to sprinkle in some melody. If you like your screamo desperate and driving, Disembarked's I Do Nothing But Regret The Fact That I Left  will serve quite well.

Saintly Rows - 2013 - Everything That I Was Afraid of Happening, Happened

Saintly Rows are a four piece screamo band from Albuquerque, New Mexico, America. Everything That I Was Afraid of Happening, Happened is their second EP. They play a brand of screamo that borrows heavily from the post-rock school of songwriting. These songs take awhile to build to their explosive climaxes which are extended in the post-rock style. On songs like Tetelestai and The Potomac the post-rock serves as a base on which the anguish of the screamo can be be lit on fire and reach even higher. If you like your screamo reaching for something beyond, Saintly Rows' Everything That I Was Afraid of Happening, Happened will serve well.

Cerce - Stresscase - 2013

Cerce was a hardcore punk from Boston Massachusets. This split with Stresscase was their fifth and final release. They play a screamo inflected brand of hardcore, this split emphasizes the stomping hardcore more than the frantic screamo of previous releases. Songs like Blossom and Damaged Goods ride their rock solid riffs into the grind underneath an increasingly desperate screamer.



Stresscase is a four piece hardcore punk band from Los Angeles. The split with Cerce is their second release. They play a thrashy brand of hardcore that isn't afraid of tossing everything to the wind on strength of a powerful riff and a strong shouter. Lonely Leach and Shallow Grasp will beat the crap out of you and leave your body in the bottom of the pit.

Forgive - 2013 - Cloak & Dagger

Forgive are a five piece hardcore punk band from Ajax, Ontario, Canada. Cloak And Dagger is their debut EP. They play a straight ahead brand of  melodic hardcore. The guitars blare their chugging riffs while the singer shouts his gravelly drill sergeant shout. These songs take the time to stretch out, twisting and turning through solos and gang shouts. Highlights include Ache and Dagger If you like your hardcore with some solos and a gruff shout, Forgive's Cloak And Dagger will serve well

Kaoru Nagis - 2013 - Concessive

Kaoru Nagis is a seven piece screamo band from Annandale, Virginia, USA. Concessive is their debut EP. They feature current members of: Caust, Perfect Future, Cape Farewell, Carved Our Names in Snow, Kilgore Trout and x-members of Studying, Solomon Solomon, Age Sixteen. Kaoru Nagis plays a chaotic, powerviolence influenced brand of screamo. These songs never sit still, exploding in all directions at all times. Reminds me of early Loma Prieta and Ampere. These songs can go from a chug, to complete chaos, to melody and back in the space of a breath. If you like your screamo with no constants other than rage and chaos, Kaoru Nagisa's Concessive will serve quite well.

Bad Blood - 2013 - Cracked

Bad Blood are a punk band from Sheffield, England. Cracked is their second release. They play a melodic brand of punk that borrows equally from emo as it does alt rock. Features members of Never Cry Wolf, Rough Justice and Without Our Crowns. Highlights include No Progress,  Broken Bones and the title track. Think Daylight or Balance And Composure and you won't be far off. If you like your hardcore with lots of melody and a straightforward songwriting style Bad Blood's Cracked will do you well.

Lay The Blame On Luck - 2013 - Demo

Lay The Blame On Luck is a four piece pop punk band from Brookly, NYC, USA. Demo is their debut recordings. They play melodic, slightly meloncholy brand of emo influenced pop punk. These two songs are equal parts indie rock and jump straight in the air pop punk. Corpses Of Past Mistakes makes me interested in where their songwriting will go from here.

Longings - 2013 - Demo

Longings are a three piece punk band from Amherst, Massachusets, America. Demo is their debut recording. Longings consist of Will Killingsworth, Meghan Minior and Cole Turkee who collectively have been in: Vaccine, Failures, Ampere, Orchid, Bucket Full of Teeth, Siamese Twins, Ampere, Death Evocation, Foreign Objects, Twerps, SKVLT and California X. Longings play a fuzzy, dark brand of post punk that isn't afraid of kicking up a noisy, hardcore storm. All of these songs attempt to the storm the gate with their dark, atmospheric post-punk. The only constant is the churning of the drums as these songs drive endlessly forward. If Bootblacks were more influenced by hardcore they might play something like this. If you like your punk in a darkened atmosphere with multiple vocalists Longings' Demo will do well.

Caust - [This is not for you.] - 2013

Caust is a four piece hardcore punk band from Virgina, USA. The split with [This is not for you.] is their fourth release. Caust plays a brand of chaotic hardcore that borrows heavily from screamo. They feature members of  Kaoru Nagisa and Swan of Tuonela. Sleep, Meaningless, Reasonless only lets up momentarily to allow the pain to come forward before slamming into hyper mode.



[This is not for you.] is a screamo band from Ocean City, Maryland, USA. The split with Caust is their second release. They play a straight ahead, brutal brand of screamo that takes no liberties. These songs launch themselves at full speed in all directions. The screams are desperate, the guitars go from raging to discordant ringing and back again while the drums churn the ground you stand on. [This is not for you.] is a band to watch.

Nevasca - 2013 - Demo

Nevasca is a four piece emo band from Murmansk, Russia. Demo is their debut recording. They play a brand of emo heavily influenced by the midwest emo sound. The singer Sasha has an excellent voice, going from clean spoken and singing into a shout at moments notice. The band beneath him plays midwest emo that goes between moments of twinkly calm and driving urgency. If you like your emo with an epic feel but don't want any post-rock and are ok with some twinkle, Nevasca's Demo will serve well.

MNMNTS - 2013 - The Choir Belongs To Us

MNMTS are a screamo band from Koblenz, Trier, Germany. The Choir Belongs To Us is their debut EP courtesy of  Bis Aufs Messer s via MEM. MNMNTS feature members of Ten Years A Day, A Case Of Grenada and Rachel Casca. These songs mine the post-hardcore and screamo veins coming up with long songs that are dark and somewhat crusty. Reminds me of Mahria, Todos Caeran and Amanda Woodward. If you like your screamo with an epic reach to it MNMTS' The Choir Belongs to Us is highly recommended.

No Tongue - 2013 - Body + Mind

No Tongue is a punk band from Oakland. Body + Mind is their second release, courtesy of Kyeo Speaks. They play a brand of hardcore that is hard to pin down in terms of genre adherence. They take the spirit of hardcore and turn into things like spacey jams (Dwanta) and an almost country wind down (Sad Country) and an all out attack that takes no prisoners (Shop Talk). All the way through on Body + Mind No Tongue charge their way through punk as they know it. No Tongue churns a myriad of influences in a blender with a heavy helping of hardcore and serves it up raw. If you like your punk with a genre hopping, experimental side to it, No Tongue's Body + Mind will serve well.

Topbunk - 2013 - Better Sleep

Topbunk is a two piece emo band from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Better Sleep is their second EP. They cite Algernon Cadwallader and Tigers Jaw as influences. Topbunk plays a wirey brand of emo with a dose of indie rock that keeps the songs scrambling forward. Highlights include Branigan and Comfort Driving. If you like your emo scrappy and noisy Topbunk's Better Sleep will serve well.

Oppressor - 2013 - Bad Mind

Oppressor is a four piece band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Bad Mind is their debut EP. They play a heavy brand of thrash metal that uses hardcore to attack even harder. Their brand of crossover thrash rarely leaves the mosh pit, focusing only on inflicting maximum sonic pain. Lost/Life finds a groove and rides into the dust, while Dagger holds back momentarily before the pummelling really starts. If you like your thrash metal with a heavy helping of hardcore, Bad Mind will serve well.

Hassler - 2013 - Amorality

Hassler are a hardcore punk band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Amorality is their second EP. They play a straight ahead brand of beatdown hardcore that comes roaring out of the gate and never lets up. Amoral has a deadly anger to it, Retaliation has an extra helping of desperate anger while Apathy shifts gears only to better pound you into the pavement. They take a helping of street punk to limber up their hardcore. If you like your hardcore, dirty, lofi and pissed off Amorality will serve well

Beth Garner - 2013 - Much Later For You

Beth Garner is a singer and guitar player from Austin, Texas, USA. Much Later For You is her new LP. These are old school rock and roll and blues songs. They shake and shimmy, making danceable rhythms while Beth croons overtop. Beth also sings on What You Gonna Do About Me from Buddy Guy's new LP Rhythm & Blues. On Much Later For You there are equal parts guitar heroics, lively horns and boogie down rock and roll. Highlights include Much Later For You, I'm The One and Doin' Me Wrong .If you like your rock and roll with some horns and a tight rhythm section Much Later For You will serve well.

Big Al And The Heavyweights - 2013 - Sunshine On Me

Big Al And The Heavyweights are a four piece blues band from New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Sunshine On Me is their new LP. They meld Blues, Zydeco and some straight forward rock and roll into a catchy combination. Reminds of the Downchild Blues Band if Downchild had a swamp boogie feel. Highlights include Pass A Good Time, Peaches, So Many Women and Sunshine On Me. Don't You Want Me has the most use of a cabasa that I've heard in any popular music let alone the blues. If you like your blues very danceable with some swamp boogie Sunshine On Me will scratch that itch.

Boulevard Lane - 2013 - Boulevard Lane

Boulevard Lane is a four piece blues band from Rio Rancho, New Mexico, USA. Boulevard Lane is their debut LP. The core of the band is singer-songwriter Angela Andazola and Bill Royal, former lead guitarist for Strange Brew and Blues Royale. They play a mixture of rock and roll with some country and blues thrown in on this album of originals. Highlights include Take Me Away, Best Of Me and A Few More.  Angela can have a floating, ethereal quality to her voice and she puts it to great use on If You Fly while Bill has a great emotional voice and puts his mandolin to great use on the aforementioned A Few More. If you like bluesy straightforward rock and roll Boulevard Lane will scratch that itch.

Touché Amoré - Just Exist

Touché Amoré are a five piece screamo band from Los Angelese, California, USA. Their new album Is Survived By is their second full length released by Deathwish Records. They play a brand of post-hardcore that walks the line between hardcore and screamo.

 The songs are usually short and very angry, drilling down to the very basics of an idea. Just Exist is longer than most but it doesn't feel like. 

The trailer that Deathwish posted has a very post-rock feel to it. I hope Is Survived By is more like Just Exist than the trailer below.

Secret Weapons - 2013 - All Of My Best Friends Are Dogs

Sweet Weapons are a four piece band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. All Of My Best Friends Are Dogs is their debut LP courtesy of Escapist Records. They draw comparisons to Jimmy Eat World and Texas Is The Reason and have featured Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré on a previous song. Sweet Weapons plays a brand of punk rock that borrows equally from alt rock, pop punk and then adds some emo in on top for flavouring. Highlights include Not Golden, Blue Crush, Hoop Dreams and Month To Month. If you like you're emo with equal parts indie rock and punk pop there will be something for you on All Of My Best Friends Are Dogs


All Of My Best Friends Are Dogs works both plugged into headphones and blasting from speakers, Secret Weapons has a particularly rich, thick sound and they work to maintain a fuzzed out bliss. Highlights includede Low End Lonny, Month To Month,   These songs sound like the epitome of summer, catchy punk rock to be blasted from a car while driving to or from some kind of water or party. If you need some catchy emo influenced punk for a summer adventure, All My Best Friends Are Dogs will serve well.

Bootblacks - 2013 - Narrowed

Bootblacks are a four piece post-punk band from Brooklyn, New York, USA. Narrowed is their new EP. They play a dark brand of post-punk. These are songs designed and perfect for extending the night as long as it can go and railing against the inevitability of the sun. The singer has a darkly booming voice and the band conjures melodramatic backgrounds and make use of the dark space in between. Highlights include Voices, Perfect Fiction and Birds. If you need some dark, brooding music that will propel your evening to melancholy, hedonistic heights Narrowed will serve well.

Black Gust - 2013 - Psychedelic Maelstrom

Black Gust are a five piece punk band from Zagreb Croatia. Psychedelic Maelstrom is their debut EP. They learned all the right lessons from bands like Adolescents, Gang Green and Black Flag and reinterpret those lessons in the garage. The singer has an excellent snotty vocals which only serve to accent the rough and ready style. Highlights include Trapped In Static, Tired Out and Thrashin'. If you like your punk loose and more concentrated on speed and energy than beatdowns Psychedelic Maelstrom is for you.

Healing Powers - Wade - 2013 - Split

Healing Powers is a three piece emo band from Durham UK. This Split is their sophomore release. Wade is an emo band from Newcastle upon Tyne. This Split is their debut release. Healing Powers leads off with a pair of meloncholy, melodic songs that are in turn slow burning and straight forward. Wade's songs have more distortion surrounding them, heading in a direction epitomized by bands like Two Line Filler. Highly recommended.

Nobody, Ever - 2013 - This Wall Is Dedicated To Liam And His Mates

Nobody, Ever is a four piece emo band from Leicester, England. This Wall Is Dedicated To Liam And His Mates is their sophomore release and their second of 2013. It picks up where Everyone Stood By The Side Of The Road left off. These songs are moodier and deliberate while the singer has a gruff voice that does desperate melody quite well.



 Highlights include every single song. Nobody, Ever starts with a somewhat slacker indie rock and constructs fuzzy, melodic emo gems on rock solid foundations. Every bit as attention grabbing and enjoyable as their debut, This Wall Is Dedicated To Liam And His Mates will scratch that emo itch quite well.

Atalanta - 2013 - Tainted

Atalanta is a three piece scream band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Tainted is their debut EP. They feature members and ex members of Half Milk (Chicago), Josh Raymond (Chicago), Walter and Perry (Seattle), and At Yalta (St. Louis). They play a dark, oppressive brand of screamo with the desperate, screamed vocals buried in the mix underneath crushing guitars. The guitars are sludgy which serves to create an even more depressive atmosphere. If you like your screamo buried in layers of gloomy, chaotic guitars Tainted will serve quite well.

Juna - 2013 - Heteroglossia

Juna is a four piece band from Athens, Georgia. Heteroglossia is their debut EP. They play a dark brand of indie rock that takes lessons from both screamo and post-rock. These songs are capable of both stretching out and creating dark, brooding moments but also building to noisy crescendo before pummelling you in the head as everything crashes back down. Highlights include A Passage, and Notes On A Penance. If you like your indie rock with some reaching elements then Heteroglossia will serve nicely.

Dead Peasants - 2013 - I

Dead Peasants are a black metal band from Baltimore, Maryland. I is their debut EP. They play a depressive, raw black metal taking influences from the grindcore and noise schools of songwriting. They can easily transition between thumping, ferocious black metal and then slow it down for some desperate screams and dark space. If you like your black metal raw, chaotic and noisy I should scratch that itch.

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals - 2013 - Walk Through Exits Only

Philip H. Anselmo & The Illlegals are a four piece heavy metal band from the USA. Walk Through Exits Only is their debut LP. Members have played in Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual and Warbeast. If you like your metal extreme, uncompromising and thrashy with lots of guitar squeals and Phil's trademark vocals this is the album for you. Highlights include Music Media Is My Whore, Usurper Bastards Rant and Bedroom Destroyer. If you've been itching for some chaotic, pummeling metal fronted by Phil Anselmo, Walk Through Exits Only is what you've been waiting for.

RIka - 2013- How to Draw a River, Step by Step

Rika is a seven piece indie rock band from Flinsbach, Niederösterreich, Austria. How To Draw A River, Step By Step is their debut LP released by Count Your Lucky Stars and Goddamn Records. They play an emo and post-rock influenced brand of indie rock. The violin, cello and flugelhorn all add excellent atmosphere. Comparisons could be made to the Appleseed Cast, a more reaching Football, Etc, and other sad meldings of indie rock with emo. Highlights include Port Dover, and October If you have a hankering for some quiet, introspective indie rock How To Draw A River, Step By Step has that in spades.

Sorder & Crowhurst - 2013 - Girl: A Collaboration

Crowhurst is a sound art collective from Los Angelese, California USA. Sorder is a grindcore band from the USA. Together they produced Girl: A Collaboration. This album is a dense, noisey attack directly at the part of the brain that attemps to sort things into patterns. If you don't like noise there's nothing here for you. This is not an album you put on for easy listening in the background, the harsh nature and uncompromising attitude forces your entire attention at all times. If you like chaotic, aggressive abrasive noise that never lets go Girl: A Collaboration has that in spades.

Government Flu - Poison Planet - 2013- Government Planet

Poison Planet is a five piece hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. Government Flu is a hardcore punk band Poland. Put them together and you have an EP called Government Planet. If you like your hardcore fast, pummelling, with no punches pulled this is the EP for you. If you're not down for some thrashy hardcore that is prepared to beat the crap out of you then move along. Government Planet won't win you over if you don't like hardcore but if you like it, this will serve quite well.

Football, etc play a brand of indie rock influenced brand of emo. The singer has a plaintive, melodic voice and the band plays a very sad, catchy style of indie rock capable of kicking up a storm.  Plaids is a hardcore punk band that does not cut any corners in their pursuit of some emo influenced hardcore. The singer has an excellent drill instructor shout while the band behind him melds hardcore, emo and post-hardcore into a catchy stew. If you like emo, hardcore or indie rock there is something here for you.

Love Interest - 2013 - Demo

Love Interest are a band from Olympia, Washington, USA. Demo is their debut EP. They play a moody brand of post-punk saturated with layers, wallowing in darkness. Narco is the standout, the energy keeps everything going in a haunted, driven manner, while Circle The Drain pairs down to some haunting synths, a simple beat and melancholy vocals. If you like artsy, synth heavy post-punk Love Interest will scratch that itch.

Old Wounds - 2013 - From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest

Old Wounds is a three piece hardcore punk band from New Jersey &  Philadelphia, USA. From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest is their debut LP. They play a sludge metal influenced brand of hardcore punk citing Turmoil, Disembodied, Indecision, and Buried Alive as influences. The focus is on the hardcore with the sludge being thrown in to stretch out and weigh down these songs. The pure hardcore attack is filtered through a sludgy metal haze. Highlights include Shallow Water, From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest and Disbelieve. If you like your hardcore fast paced without pulling any punches From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest should be right up your alley.

Acousma is a hardcore punk band from Prince Edward Island, Canada. Acousma is their debut EP. They play a screamo influenced brand of hardcore. They have learned their lessons well and crafted a debut that comes screaming out of the gate and barely gives you a moment to catch your breath. Highlights include Evading The Pervasive, Fire Is Bright & Fire Is Clean and Ancient Transcripts.



The singer puts his voices through the paces with agonizing shrieks and a very gruff voice. Recorded live off the floor in their jam space and then sent for mixing and mastering to Will Killingsworth of  Orchid, Laceration, Bucket Full of Teeth, Clean Plate record label and Dead Air Studios. If you like your hardcore chaotic and raw Acousma will do nicely.

Crows-An-Wra - 2013 - Crows-An-Wra

Crows-An-Wra are a four piece punk band from the UK. Crows-An-Wra is their debut courtesy of Barely Legal, Boslevan, Flood, Listen To Aylin, Alcove and Middleman Records.They play a desperate brand of screamo that isn't afraid of dismantling the songs at a moments notice. The singer has an excellent voice capable of an impassioned higher pitched shout as well as an excellent gravel voiced desperate guttural scream. Crows-An-Wra is a debut that makes me want to hear more.

Neighborhood Archers is a four piece punk band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They have released two EP's so far this year, Foundation Shake Up Event and Geronimo Jones. They play a brand of post-punk that brings in elements of hardcore, indie rock and emo. This live recording emphasizes the hardcore and post-punk elements while the two EP's are more on the indie rock and emo side of the spectrum. Neighborhood Archers features members of 40 Thieves, Good Things and Punch Out. If you like indie rock, emo, or catchy songs Neighborhood Archers is as band to watch.

Bad Noids are a four piece hardcore punk band from Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Everything From Soup To Dessert is their debut LP. They play a chaotic brand of hardcore that excels at inverting everything it can inside a hardcore song in pursuit of noisy glory.



 Like a dirter, crustier Wiccans, a brand of post hardcore that doesn't care about genres or songwriting styles and just hurtles itself through these songs, some of which sound like they could collapse into a smouldering ruin at any moment. Bad Noids excel at finding a solid groove and then fucking up the song, transforming them into limber beasts that rapidly change and use every single tool in their toolbox. If you like your hardcore experimental and chaotic Everything From Soup To Dessert is right up your alley.

Neighborhood Brats - 2013 - Birth Right

Neighborhood Brats are a punk band from San Francisco, California, USA. Birth Right is their fourth release, courtesy of Deranged Records. They play a speedy, fuzzy, garage based brand of punk that is the perfect soundtrack to a night in the desert that takes some strange turns. Reminds me of a fuzzier, more garage focused version of The Demonics or a less funny, more driven version of the Lunachicks. Excellent garage punk rock.



These songs are energetic, to the point and breeze on by if you're not paying attention. Female vocals, backing gang vocals and speedy guitars make for catchy punk rock that yearns for a beach. They rock out a cover of Break Down the Walls by Youth of Today. If you need some catchy punk rock as the soundtrack for your beach party Neighborhood Brats' Birth Right will do quite nicely.

Dads are a two piece punk band from New Jersey, USA. They have a new EP coming out on No Sleep Records called Pretty Good. The AV Club is streaming a song from it, My Crass Patch. It's definitely heavier than I was expecting.

Blank Pages - 2013 - Blank Pages

Blank Pages is a punk band from Berlin, Germany. Blank Pages is their debut LP courtesy of Hardware Records. They play a catchy brand of punk that puts a focus on energetic melody, citing Wipers as an influence. Their brand of punk borrows equally from glam rock, post-punk and 80's style hardcore songwriting. Blank Pages features ex members of Idle Hands. These songs have their own personality and the band does all it can to mine the area they have staked out

Cheap Drugs - 2013 - Cheap Drugs

Cheap Drugs are a five piece hardcore punk band from Gent, Belgium. Cheap Drugs is their debut 7" courtesy of Hardware Records. They play a catchy, speedy brand of hardcore that can smash your face in but also veer towards something approaching a melody. Not In My Face comes roaring out of the gate, the title track has an epic stomp to it and even a catchy chorus while the rest of the album focuses on mosh pit creating chaotic hardcore. If you like your hardcore punk noisy and passionate then this is for you.

Criaturas is a hardcore punk band from Austin, Texas, USA. Espiratu De Libertad is their fourth release. They play a speedy brand of hardcore punk with a female lead singer. Her voice adds just a hint of melody  or it can be another angry brutal instrument in a chaotic sea of hardcore punk. This is how hardcore punk should be done, really fast, really pissed off and not scared of taking a few risks in expressing their rage.

Warren Franklin & The Founding Fathers - 2013 -Every Letter And Souvenir

Warren Franklin & The Founding Fathers is a five piece emo band from Rockford, Illinois. Every Letter And Souvenir is their fifth release, being put out by Count Your Lucky Stars Records. Warren Franklin & The Founding Fathers play a brand of rock and roll that owes a huge debt to the midwest emo feel. These songs are big and melodic but never leave behind the base of emo, they describe their own sound as campfire emo. If you like good songwriting, catchy songs, earnest up front emotion and solidly played instruments Every Letter And Souvenir will solidly scratch that itch and get stuck in your head for weeks while doing it.
