Deborah Sampson was born December 17, 1760, died April 29, 1827. She disguised herself as a woman in order to fight in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. One of few women documented to have done so she served with distinction earning at least one promotion and when her gender was discovered she was allowed to keep her pension she had earned fighting in the Revolutionary War.
